After the death of Khan Muhammad-Amin in 1518, the dynasty of the Kazan Juchids, descendants of Ulugh Muhammad, was interrupted. In an effort to align with Rus', the Kazan dignitaries placed the 14-year-old Khan of Kasimov, Shah-Ali, on the throne. However, the young Shah-Ali was unable to cope with his khanate duties, which led to a decrease in his authority and his overthrow in 1521.
