Mount Etna is a volcano in Sicily, Italy. It is the highest and most active volcano in Europe. Every year, hundreds of people go to Mount Etna to get a close look at it! One of Mount Etna's biggest eruptions was in 1169. In 1928, an eruption from the volcano destroyed two villages. Since then, there have been many eruptions. On 5th June, 2000, an eruption caused a huge cloud of smoke. The cloud blocked out the sun and everywhere was dark. Black dust covered Catania, a city close to the volcano. Donald Ashton is a volcano 'fan' and he has been to Mount Etna many times. "I've seen a lot of eruptions," he said. "I saw one two weeks before. It was like a big fireworks display! It's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen!"
