1)

  1. The old woman bought a little pig because she wanted it to help her cross the stile and get home.
  2. The pig wouldn’t go over the stile because it was stubborn and did not want to move.
  3. The dog, the stick, the fire and the others would not help because each of them refused to do what the old woman asked.
  4. The cat and the cow helped her because they were kind and understood that she was in trouble.

2) The best proverb is “A friend in need is a friend indeed.” The cat and the cow helped the old woman when nobody else would help her.

3) The old woman asked the cow to help her. The cow ate the hay and gave the old woman some milk. Then the old woman gave the cat a saucer of milk. The cat chased the rat, the rat pulled the rope, the rope tied the ox, the ox pulled the butcher, the butcher cut the stick, the stick beat the fire, and the fire burned the water. The water wet the ox, the ox ran, and the pig finally went over the stile. The old woman got home safely that night.
